Mainz announce new signing
Dong-Won Ji will join the club on a free from FC Augsburg
Mainz announced today that they have signed South Korean international Dong-Won Ji. The current Augsburg attacker, who will be a free agent at the end of the season, will join the club for the 2019-20 season on a three-year deal until 2022. In addition to Augsburg, Ji has played for Borussia Dortmund and Darmstadt 98, as well as a stint with AFC Sunderland in the Premier League. The 27-year-old is a versatile attacking player, able to feature as a striker, as well as down the wings or in central midfield. The South Korean has 54 international caps to his name, having scored 11 goals for his country. He featured in 124 matches during his time at Augsburg, scoring 16 goals.
“We’re pleased to have signed a player like Dong-Won Ji, who brings with him many years of both domestic and international experience. Being able to sign him on a free is another bonus for us. Ji is a creative attacking player, who is extremely versatile and can play many different positions. Aside from that, he is also a team player who will help to strengthen our squad,” said Mainz sporting director Rouven Schröder.
“Based on his athleticism and his mindset, Dong-Won Ji is a perfect fit for Mainz. He is extremely positive and has been very receptive to the club, our city, and our way of playing. We’ve gained a versatile and technically strong attacking player by signing him,” said head coach Sandro Schwarz.
“I have known the club for many years—Mainz are a good team and the club is very likable. I had good conversations with both Rouven Schröder and Sandro Schwarz, and I like their approach to the way that they play football here. I also spoke with Ja-Cheol Koo, who previously played for Mainz. He told me that I would feel very welcome here, both within the club and the city itself. My first impressions of Mainz have confirmed that. I’m looking forward to getting to play for Mainz next season,” said Dong-Won Ji.
