Mainz 05 supports ‘Fridays for Future’
An environmentally-friendly trip to Schalke – Lehmann: We wholly support the goals of the climate strike
On Friday, 20th September, the third global climate strike organised by Fridays for Future will coincide with the opening game of matchday 5, in which 1. FSV Mainz 05 will meet with FC Schalke 04. As the first climate-neutral Bundesliga club, the Zerofivers are showing their support for the Fridays for Future initiative by setting a clear sign in favour of sustainability and the need to protect our environment. The club is offering 500 fans an environmentally-friendly trip to the away match in Gelsenkirchen via a subsidised chartered train for €25.
Employees given day off to participate in climate rallies
1. FSV Mainz 05 will also be supporting local climate rallies in support of Fridays for Future. Club employees who are not directly involved in matchday operations will be given the day off on 20th September in order to take part in the demonstrations and rallies planned by Fridays for Future.
“Through its projects and partnerships, Mainz 05 advocates for sustainability and the protection of our environment. As a result, we are wholly in support of what Fridays for Future stand for: to strengthen and increase awareness of our collective responsibility to protect our environment. It’s a responsibility that we also feel as the Bundesliga’s first climate-neutral club,” said Dr. Jan Lehmann, Mainz 05 board member for finance and commerce. “The entire club is working on reducing our consumption of resources, and to minimise or compensate in areas where we are unable to avoid using resources.”
Mainz 05 and sustainability:
1. FSV Mainz 05 are in the midst of their eleventh consecutive Bundesliga season. The Zerofivers not only stand for sporting success, but also for environmental and social engagement. Since becoming the first climate-neutral Bundesliga club in 2010, we have proved our commitment to being environmentally-aware under our public initiative “Mission: Protect the Environment.” Our energy management system is TÜV-certified. Fans can also take part in conserving our environment via our various social programs: the 05er Kids Club, the 05er Classroom, the 05er Youngsters and 05er Classics. Sustainability also plays a key role in our partnerships, for example with our main sponsor Kömmerling, green electricity provider ENTEGA, or our water provider Rhenser.
