"It's a horrible feeling"
Reaction from Köln defeat
Mainz have come away from their games against Mönchengladbach, Augsburg and Köln with just a point. The busy week came to a disappointing conclusion as Mainz threw away a two-goal lead in Cologne and came away empty-handed. It was not easy for the players or the coaches to come up with an explanation as to what happened after the game. “Our heads are down,” said Jonny Burkardt.
Reaction after the 3-2 defeat:
Anton Stach: “It’s hard to find an explanation. I think the turning point was Köln’s first goal, their fans really got behind them after that. We may have taken our foot off the gas in certain situations. We’ve had three away games in six days and you could tell Köln were the fresher side at the end.”
Martin Schmidt: “It was a fantastic away performance for the first 60 minutes and we were deservedly in front. Our opponents were stunned and maybe we got too comfortable. Their goal to make it 2-1 came out of nowhere. That got them back into the game and they made some good substitutions on top of that. They got the wind in their sails and the supporters got behind them. They ended up out-muscling us in the middle of the park.”
