In-form Foals against fast-starting Mainz

Facts and statistics ahead of the Zerofivers’ trip to Mönchengladbach

Silvan Widmer’s first Bundesliga goal secured Mainz a well-earned point against Gladbach earlier in the season.

It’s a clash of two sides line astern in the Bundesliga table: 1. FSV Mainz 05, currently tenth on 37 points, will travel to the team directly below them in the league, Borussia Mönchengladbach, on Sunday evening (17:30 CEST). A fast and furious second 45 minutes from the Zerofivers in their game against the Foals at the MEWA ARENA earlier this season saw them earn a well-deserved point. “We saw what happened in the first game; we played well, but you could really see the quality they have,” said Bo Svensson about Sunday’s opponents in his press conference ahead of the game. Adi Hütter’s Gladbach side have won their last two games: “You can already expect that it won’t be too easy for us. Nevertheless, our task is to make things difficult for them, and we can definitely do that,” said Mainz’s head coach.

A look at the opposition

The start of this season saw Adi Hütter take over in Mönchengladbach after three years in charge of Eintracht Frankfurt. The Austrian took the place of Marco Rose who joined Borussia Dortmund and took charge of a mixed start to the season. With three winless games to start the season, the Foals then showed flashes of their huge potential with a 5-0 DFB-Pokal win against Bayern München and a 4-0 league win at home to Fürth. On the other hand, they also endured two separate 6-0 defeats, one of which a shocking loss at home to Freiburg where the away side scored six goals in the opening 37 minutes of the game, and the other a pummelling at the hands of Marco Rose’s BVB, as well as 4-1 losses to Köln and Leipzig. They also suffered a cup upset when they were beaten 3-0 at struggling second division side Hannover 96, but things have started to look up for Hütter’s side and they have now won two on the spin.

Turning the form around?

Borussia Mönchengladbach won back-to-back games for the first time since the end of September in their last two, collecting the same amount of wins as they had in their last 13 matches combined. They have also collected seven points from their last three home games.

Head-to-head

Gladbach have had the better record in the two sides’ 31 Bundesliga meetings. The Foals have 14 wins against Mainz, with the Zerofivers taking eight – there have also been nine draws.

Goals conceded

With just 30 goals conceded this season, Bo Svensson’s side has the third-best defence in the Bundesliga this season. On the other hand, Gladbach’s 51 goals sees them with the third-worst defensive record.

Strikers amongst the goals

Jonathan Burkardt’s brace against Bielefeld took him onto nine goals this season. The last player to score as many goals for Mainz at this stage of a Bundesliga campaign was Robin Quaison in 2019/20 (12, although Burkardt still has a game in hand).

Hütter against the Zerofivers

Gladbach head coach Adi Hütter has won just one of his seven Bundesliga games against 1. FSV Mainz 05 (D3, L3) – 2-0 away with Eintracht Frankfurt in January 2021.With the exception of his current club, he doesn’t have a lower points-per-game average against any other side he’s faced multiple times in the Bundesliga than he does against Mainz (0.86).

Getting the shots off

Anton Stach returned to the squad after his yellow-card suspension. Despite having missed a game, Stach has taken more shots than any other Bundesliga player in 2022 (25). On the other hand, no other player in the division has taken more shots than Stach in the second half of the season without scoring.

Svensson and the Foals

Bo Svensson played for Borussia from January 2006 to summer 2007 and made the first of his 32 Bundesliga appearances for the Foals (2 goals).

Quick starters

Jonny Burkardt has scored two goals in the first two minutes of matches this season (most recently, he netted after just 27 seconds against Bielefeld – the joint fastest goal this term). All other players combined have netted just four goals in this timeframe of matches.

Svensson at the wheel

Mainz have picked up more points (70) in 46 Bundesliga games under Svensson than Borussia have managed in the same timeframe.
