Jonathan Burkhardt and Finn Dahmen have qualified for the quarter-finals of the U21 European Championship with the German U21 national team. In the preliminary round, the DFB youngsters first faced hosts Hungary (3-0), then the Dutch team (1-1) and finally Romania (0-0). Dahmen was the German goalkeeper in all three games, Burkhardt also started against Hungary. Against the Elftal, the striker came in shortly before the end of the game and initiated the late equaliser. Burkhardt was also a substitute against the Romanians. Ridle Baku and Lennart Grill, two other players who trained at the Mainz academy, were also in the squad.

Defender Jeremiah St. Juste, who was called up for the first time for the extended squad of the Dutch senior national team, still has to wait for his debut with the Elftal. The 24-year-old did not play in the Oranje's three World Cup qualifiers against Turkey (2-4), Latvia (2-0) and Gibraltar (7-0).

Luxembourg trio victorious with national team

Leandro Barreiro, who like U23 player Florian Bohnert and U19 player Timothé Rupil was called up to Luxembourg's senior national team, was on the pitch for the full duration of the match in the 1-0 victory in the World Cup qualifier against Ireland. Three days earlier, Luxembourg also played Qatar (0-1) in a friendly match in which Bohnert played 90 minutes. Last night, Barreiro and his colleagues played against the Portuguese team around superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. The Luxembourgers even took the lead at first, but were beaten 3-1 in the end. Barreiro played the entire 90 minutes, the players from the academy did not play.

Edimilson Fernandes, who is away with the Swiss national team, played in the Swiss' 1-0 win in the World Cup qualifier against Lithuania, where he was substituted after 65 minutes. In the friendly match against Finland (3-2), Fernandes was allowed to play in attacking midfield for the full duration of the match.

Quaison replaces Ibrahimovic

Striker Karim Onisiwo also gained international match practice during the international break: In Austria's 3-1 victory in the World Cup qualifier against the Faroe Islands, coach Franco Foda brought on the 29-year-old after 76 minutes for TSG Hoffenheim professional Christoph Baumgartner. Onisiwo did not play against Denmark (0-4).

In the friendly match against Estonia (1-0), the 05 attacker was given another 90 minutes of match time.

Szalai scores twice

Ádám Szalai also had a successful start into the first international period of the year: The 33-year-old captain of the Hungarian national team was in the starting eleven in both World Cup qualifiers against Poland (3-3) and San Marino (3-0) and scored one goal each. Szalai also played against Andorra (4-1).

Meanwhile, midfielder Pierre Kunde Malong played for Cameroon in their 3-1 defeat to Cape Verde in the Africa Cup qualifier, but the 25-year-old made his presence felt with a dream free-kick to take the lead. Last night, Cameroon hosted the national team of Rwanda. In the goalless draw, Kunde once again played the entire match.
