First Freiburg friendly ends in a draw

Mainz play out a 2-2 draw in the first of two matches against SC Freiburg

Mainz opened up a 2-0 lead before Freiburg came back to secure a draw.

1. FSV Mainz 05’s winter training camp draws to a close on Saturday and the Bundesliga club have played out a 2-2 draw in the first of two friendlies against SC Freiburg in Estepona, Spain.

In the first half, Mainz were the dominant side and were at their most dangerous on the counter. The 05ers opened the scoring after a counter from their own corner as Gerrit Holtmann broke clear after a long ball. Holtmann then had the awareness to play in Anthony Ujah who precisely finished the move to give the 05ers the lead. Shortly afterwards, Levin Öztunali doubled Mainz’s lead as he won possession of the ball before giving Freiburg goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow no chance. The 05ers led 2-0 at the break

The second half was a completely different story as Freiburg came back into the match. After a goal had been ruled out for offside, Dominque Heintz headed home to put the Breisgau club on the scoresheet before former Mainz striker Florian Niederlechner drew Freiburg level. Anthony Ujah created a chance to put Mainz back in front but his shot fell narrowly wide of Schwolow’s goal into the side netting. The match ended in an exciting draw.
