Eleven Mainz players called up for international duty

Head coach Sandro Schwarz has had his training group for the coming days reduced by a number of international call-ups. A total of eleven Mainz players are travelling with their respective national teams.

There will be a small training group at Bruchweg over the next few days

Leandro Barreiro is heading to Belfast with Luxembourg to face Northern Ireland in a friendly match (Thursday, 5th September), before playing Serbia in Luxembourg in a European Championship qualifier (Tuesday, 10th September). Likewise, Mainz U23 player Florian Bohnert has been selected for the Luxembourg squad.

Fernandes, Maxim, Onisiwo, Szalai & Quaison all in Euros qualifying action

Two European qualifying matches await Edimilson Fernandes and Switzerland, the first against Ireland in Dublin (5th September) and the second against Gibraltar in Sion (8th September). Alexandru Maxim, Karim Onisiwo, Ádám Szalai and Robin Quaison will also represent their countries in qualifying matches for the Euros: Maxim for Romania on 5th September against Spain in Bucharest and on 8th September against Malta in Ploiesti, Onisiwo for Austria against Latvia in Salzburg on 6th September and on 9th September against Poland in Warsaw, Ádám Szalai for Hungary against Montenegro on 5th September and against Slovakia on 9th September in Budapest, and Quaison for Sweden against the Faroe Islands on 5th September in Torshavn and against Norway on 8th September in Stockholm.

Taiwo Awoniyi joins the Nigeria U23s side for a double header against Sudan’s U23s (5th September in Ounduman & 10th September in Asaba) with both sides fighting for Olympics 2020 qualification. Omer Hanin travels with the Israel U21s team to Astana for an U21 European Championship qualifier against Kazakhstan (10th September).

Germany youth team selections

Three Mainz players are also away with Germany youth teams. Ridle Baku and the U21 side face Greece in a friendly match on 5th September in Zwickau and Wales in a Euros qualifying match in Wrexham on 10th September. Jonathan Burkardt (with Jonathan Meier on standby) joins the U20s for matches against the Czech Republic and the Netherlands (5th and 8th September). Erkan Eyibil and the U19s are involved in two friendly matches, the first against Spain in San Pedro de Pinatar (4th September) and the second against England in Haiger (9th September). Also nominated for the U19 national team are Oscar Schönfelder and Niklas Tauer from the Mainz youth academy.
