Done deal: Awoniyi signs from Liverpool
Forward arrives at the Bruchweg on loan
Taiwo Awoniyi has officially joined 1. FSV Mainz 05 from Liverpool FC on loan. The 21-year-old forward will train with the Zerofivers for the first time this Thursday afternoon at the Bruchweg. Awoniyi has already had the opportunity to play in a few top-flight European leagues, most recently in the Belgian Pro League with Royal Excel Mouscron (14 goals in 38 games). The transfer details are undisclosed.
“Taiwo Awoniyi is still young, but has always managed to make his mark wherever he’s been. He is a fighter, a very robust player and has always proved himself to be a team player. Taiwo is a striker who feels very confident in the box and is always looking to score. In our talks with him, it was very clear that he fully indentifies with Mainz 05 and our goals, despite it being a loan deal, which we were glad to hear”, said sporting director Rouven Schröder.
I am grateful that I have the chance to prove myself here
“With his physical strength and his tendency to get in behind, Taiwo Awoniyi carries a real threat up front. But he also has a very good work rate off the ball and helps out his teammates. His goal record in Belgium is proof of his goalscoring ability at a high level. On top of that, Taiwo has a great mentality and is ready for the challenge of the Bundesliga. We are very glad to have him with us for the upcoming year”, said Mainz head coach Sandro Schwarz.
Taiwo Awoniyi added: “I am looking forward to playing for Mainz 05. The talks with the management went very well and I have received a warm welcome. The Bundesliga is a top European league and I grateful for the chance to prove myself.”
