Convincing 12-0 win in opening summer friendly against FuPa Allstars Rheinhessen
Eventful second half leads to ten goals for the 05ers
In their opening friendly of the 2019/20 pre-season, 1. FSV Mainz 05 have secured a convincing 12-0 victory against the FuPa Allstars Rheinhessen in the Bruchwegstadion in Mainz. 05ers head coach Sandro Schwarz included several academy players in his squad for the opening test of the summer against a regional amateur XI from Rheinhessen. Academy players included Paul Nebel, Merveille Papela, Oscar Schönfelder, Niklas Tauer and Alessio Curci. After taking a 2-0 lead into half-time, the hosts dominated the second half and added ten more goals to their tally.
Immediately from kick-off, Mainz enjoyed a lot of possession as well as territory in the opposition’s half. Despite some courageous exchanges from the amateur opponents, the hosts created the first chance of game in the eighth minute as U19s attacker Schönfelder fired a shot narrowly wide of the left post. 05ers goalkeeper Robin Zentner was called into action for the first time in the 27th minute, denying a Serdal Günes shot. Eventually, the hosts broke the deadlock through youngster Schönfelder through a bicycle kick after good build-up play from Daniel Brosinski (33’). Shortly before half-time, new signing Dong-Won Ji scored his first goal for the club to double Mainz’s lead going into half-time (44’).
Non-stop goals in thrilling second half for 05ers
The second half had barely kicked off when half-time substitute Jonathan Burkardt scored twice in the opening two minutes to put Mainz on their way to a comfortable victory (46’, 47’). Fellow substitute Erkan Eyibil matched Burkardt by scoring two goals in as many minutes to leave the 05ers 6-0 up just six minutes after the restart (50’, 51’). The hosts didn’t waste any time building on their goal tally as Ridle Baku, also introduced after the break, scored a hat-trick in just seven minutes over the hour mark (56’, 59, 63’).
Mainz continued to put the pressure on the FuPA Allstars as Burkardt turned provider to fire a cross from the right wing into the path of Jean-Paul Boëtius who took the goal tally into double figures (73’). Burkardt completed his hat-trick by adding an eleventh Mainz goal with eight minutes to go before Eyibil completed the rout and his hat-trick with a stoppage time free-kick. This left a final score of 12-0 in Mainz’s favour.
