Home-grown player signs early / "Best for my personal development".

Feeling good at Mainz: Jonathan Burkardt.

Jonathan Burkardt has extended his contract prematurely by another two years and will remain with Mainz 05 until 2024. The 20-year-old attacker, who comes from the club's own academy and made his Bundesliga debut for the Zerofivers in September 2018, has established himself as a permanent fixture at Mainz: In the past season, Burkardt played 31 competitive games (2 goals, 3 assists) in the Bundesliga and the DFB Cup for Mainz 05.

"We feel it is a great appreciation towards Mainz 05 when the talents from our own youth, whom we have introduced to the Bundesliga, also see this club as the optimal environment for their second and third development steps. The fact that we can also rely on Jonny in the coming years and accompany his development is a compliment to the Mainz way," says 05 sporting director Martin Schmidt.

Svensson: "We will help him to realise his full potential".

05 head coach Bo Svensson: "Jonny leaves his heart on the pitch in every game and is always ready to push his own limits for his team. He was already a huge offensive talent in his youth, has managed to establish himself in the Bundesliga and now wants to make his mark. We will help him realise his full potential and continue to excel."

Still far from finished in Mainz

"For my personal development, it's best to stay on at Mainz 05 because I'm far from finished here and can still make a difference. Above all, I want to take another step next season and score more goals. I'm really looking forward to playing in front of the fans again and showing them what I can do. Mainz has become my home, I moved here, I feel very comfortable at the club, in the team and with the coaching team. That's why I'm very happy to have extended my contract for another two years," says Jonathan Burkardt.
