After 13 years: Baku leaves Mainz 05
U21 national player signs a five-year contract in Wolfsburg - Schröder: "Ridle’s strong wish fulfilled".
Ridle Baku will leave his home club Mainz 05 for Wolfsburg. The Mainz-born player has signed a five-year contract with VfL until 2025. Baku had played in all FSV youth teams since 2007, starting with the U9, and made his Bundesliga debut for the 05 first team in April 2018. Since then, Baku has played 54 matches for the 05ER in the Bundesliga and the DFB Cup (3 goals, 3 assists).
05 sports director Rouven Schröder says: "Ridle is a very ambitious young player who expressed the desire to move club over a year ago. He sees his next steps outside of Mainz and wants to grow in a new challenge outside of his home club. We would have liked to keep Ridle on, he was a key player, is one of the showpieces of the good work in our academy, and, as a native of Mainz, one of the players our fans identify with. We have now complied with Ridle's strong wish to continue his development outside his usual environment, also because the overall economic package of this transfer will help Mainz 05 in the current situation."
Mainz will always be my home!
Ridle Baku says goodbye to FSV with the following words: "After 13 years in Mainz, it is now time to say goodbye. It is with great anticipation and yet with a heavy heart that I take this new step in my life and face a new challenge. I was born, grew up and went to school in Mainz. Since 2007 I have been playing for Mainz 05, where I was able to pass through all the youth teams and become a Bundesliga professional. I will never forget how it all began, from the motorway straight to the Bundesliga. I am infinitely grateful that I was able to develop this way at my home club. I would like to say thank you for all this! Thanks to all fans, team-mates, coaches and staff, thanks also to Rouven Schröder, who made a lot of things possible for me in Mainz. I will remember this time with great memories. One thing is clear: Mainz will always remain my home!"
