Captain of the Hungarian national team extends for another year

Important milestone on the way to staying in the Bundesliga last season: Ádám Szalai's goal in the away win in Bremen.

Ádám Szalai will remain a Zerofiver for the coming season: The captain of the Hungarian national team has extended his contract with Mainz 05 by another year. Szalai, who already played for Mainz from 2010 to 2013 and returned to Bruchweg in 2019, has played a total of 132 competitive games (27 goals, 14 assists) for the Rheinhessen side.

"Ádám is an important anchor for his team and played a big part in the outstanding second half of last season. On the pitch, he is an absolute fighter and an unpleasant opponent for every defender, always leading the way for his team. But also in the dressing room, Ádám is an important figure, on whom especially the young players can base themselves on. We are pleased that the captain of the Hungarian national team now wants to continue with us for another year on the path we embarked on in January," says 05's sporting director Christian Heidel.

Dear Mainzers - see you again soon in our stadium!

Ádám Szalai says: "I am looking forward to another year at Mainz, especially after our incredible second half of the season. The hard work has paid off, together as a team we were able to cement our place in the league despite an almost impossible starting position. Now I would like to do my bit to ensure that in the coming Bundesliga season we present ourselves from the first matchday onwards in the way that 05 fans know and love their club. Dear Mainzers - see you again soon in our stadium!"
