International break ends: Eight 05 internationals expected back at Bruchweg by Thursday
The Zerofivers started the training week on Monday afternoon with a decimated squad. As of Thursday, head coach Bo Svensson will be able to call on his entire training group again to prepare them for the Bundesliga match at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Saturday (3.30pm, live on Sky & 05ER.fm). The eight 05 players on the road return to Mainz with a wide variety of experiences.
The first two international matches for 05 defender Silvan Widmer and the Swiss team went without defeat. In the 2-1 friendly win against Greece, Widmer was in the starting eleven and played 45 minutes. In the 0-0 World Cup qualifier against European champions Italy, the 28-year-old played the entire 90 minutes and celebrated a respectable success. After Wednesday's qualifier against Northern Ireland, Widmer is expected back in Mainz on Thursday.
Perennial favourite Barreiro
Leandro Barreiro played two World Cup qualifiers with the Luxembourg national team against Azerbaijan, who were beaten 2-1, and Serbia, who lost 4-1. Barreiro played 90 minutes in both matches. The 21-year-old will return to Bruchweg on Wednesday after a final friendly with Qatar.
Attacking player Jae-sung Lee drew 0-0 playing for the South Korean national team in the World Cup qualifier against Iraq. The 29-year-old was in the starting eleven and could also get some playing time in tomorrow's second qualifying match against Lebanon. Lee is scheduled to return on Wednesday.
Hungary's captain Ádám Szalai was on the pitch for the full duration of the 4-0 defeat to England in the World Cup qualifier. After a positive Corona test result last Friday, the 33-year-old was not in the squad for the international match against Albania (0-1) on Sunday due to the quarantine rules in force. However, two tests on Saturday and Sunday were subsequently negative. How and when things will continue for the veteran, and whether he might even be able to play in his team's final match against Andorra on Wednesday evening, is currently open.
U21 captain Burkardt scores twice
Mainz's own Jonathan Burkardt not only captained the German U21 national team against San Marino last week, the 21-year-old also scored a brace in the 6-0 win.
