05ers fall to narrow friendly defeat against Standard Liege
Despite a half-time lead, the Belgians win friendly in Marbella
Despite taking a 2-0 lead into half-time, 1. FSV Mainz 05 have fallen to a narrow 3-2 defeat against Standard Liege in their first friendly of the winter training camp. Jean-Peal Boetius and Jean-Philippe Mateta had given the 05ers a fully deserved lead at the break but the Belgians turned the match around in the second half, courtesy of two penalties and an impressive volley.
Mainz struggled in the opening stages and were grateful for goalkeeper Florian Müller, who was forced in a couple of early saves. However, the Bundesliga club took the lead with the first real chance of the match as Mateta forced a save from Standard goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa before Boetius was there to score at the second attempt from ten metres out. Mainz grew in confidence and had the ball in the back of the Standard net just three minutes later, albeit from an offside position. Aarón Martín played in Iassah Abass at the end of a well worked attack but Abass struck home from an offside position. At the other end, Orlando Sá also ran a split second too soon, heading home from offside.
Two Standard penalties after half-time
For the remainder of the first half, the 05ers proved to be the better team. Good combination play led to plenty of chances in front of goal. Boetius was at the centre of the good action as he went close to a brace after good build-up play from Levin Öztunali (23’). Mateta also missed a chance to double Mainz’s lead eight minutes later, as a Kunde Malong cross was headed on by Alexander hack but Mateta was unable to finish. However, the 05ers top goalscorer would get on the scoresheet in the 37th minute as Boetius created space for the Frenchman in the box and Mainz had a two goal lead at half-time. Ridle Baku did hit the side netting in the final chance of the half.
Mainz head coach Sandro Schwarz made eleven changes for the second half, in which two penalties were awarded. Gerrit Holtmann created the next chance shortly after the restart but the attacker was unable to covert his opportunity. The 05ers were also fortunate not to concede in the 57th minute as Razvan Marin was only able to hit the post with his shot. However, just nine minutes later, Standard halved the deficit after a penalty was awarded for a foul by Giulio Donati. Renaud Emond converted and Standard were back in the match. 05ers goalkeeper Robin Zentner was also helpless with the 82nd minute equaliser for the Belgians as Marin volley home from ten metres out. Satndard were awarded a second penalty late on for another foul, this time from Nico Bungert who was a fraction late with his tackle. Zentner dived the right way but was unable to keep the ball out of the net and the Belgians took the lead. The 05ers were unable to find an opening for an equaliser and Standard Liege held on for a 3-2 victory, which didn’t seem likely at half-time.
